Sustainability Institute Hosts EESC Conference
Thanks to Cillian Lohan and the European Economic and Social Committee for choosing UCC as the location for the excellent conference on ‘Civil Society Driving the EU Sustainability Agenda’
After welcome addresses from UCC President John O'Halloran, Ireland’s Biodiversity Minister Christopher O’Sullivan and EESC President Cillian Lohan we had the pleasure of an inspiring and motivating keynote address from former Commissioner and Executive Vice President of the European Commission Frans Timmermans who spoke of the key role that civil society and the EESC has in driving sustainability policy at EU level.
He correctly pointed to the need to ensure a rebalancing of financial supports for the energy transition towards those who are socioeconomically disadvantaged. Without a just transition, there will just be a transition.
There followed an excellent panel discussion with Anna Schoemakers, Karen Ciesielski, Diandra N., Enrico Giovannini and #Mary_Codd.
Huge thanks to UCC Sustainability Institute’s Paul Deane and Aisling Murphy for bringing this important event to UCC and for all their support to the EESC team.
