Brian Ó Gallachóir was delighted to deliver a keynote address on ‘Climate leadership grounded in tangible delivery.’
Huge thanks to Stephanie Thompson for inviting Brian to this excellent Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science Sustainability Champions Community of Practice Forum.
It was great to chat with Minister James Lawless about the work of the recently established National Science Advice Forum that I have the privilege of being a member of.
It was also wonderful to learn about the excellent sustainability initiatives and activities underway within Ireland’s Universities, Technological Universities and Education and Training Boards.
Brian reflected on key learnings in University College Cork on what has worked for us in driving and delivering on sustainability including
1) our student led, research informed and practice focused approach to #sustainability_practice that enabled us achieve a 46% reduction in fossil fuel emissions since 2018
2) our dual focus on achieving scientific excellence and maximum societal impact from our 480 researchers in UCC Sustainability Institute, where we translate research results into impact that has informed policy, supported business and empowered society
3) our training sustainability leaders of tomorrow through our multiple undergraduate and postgraduate programmes (including our new BSc in Sustainability) and our bespoke short CPD courses delivered by UCC Sustainability Academy.
