IBD Insights: Living with the disease

Introduction

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), which includes Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis, is a serious, chronic digestive condition affecting over five million people worldwide. Despite extensive research, there is still no known cause or cure. At APC, we are investigating the role of the microbiome, immune system, and lifestyle in IBD to better understand the disease and drive innovation in treatments and therapies.

IBD Insights is a collaborative effort between researchers and a panel of patient contributors, developed as part of a wider Public and Patient Involvement (PPI) initiative. We recognize the critical importance of integrating the patient voice at every stage of our research— from study design and management to the application of findings in industry, healthcare, and the development of food and health products.

PPI is research conducted with or by members of the public, rather than to, about, or for them. IBD Insights was created to address topics our PPI panel identified as most relevant to the IBD community. Each article includes:

  • A patient perspective, written by Kevin Moore, one of our patient collaborators.
  • A scientific explanation, titled The Science Behind, written by APC PhD researcher Naomi Hanrahan and reviewed by an expert panel.

Everyone’s IBD journey is unique, but we hope that the insights shared through this series will resonate with readers and provide valuable information for those facing similar challenges.

This mini-series will feature three articles:

  1. Patient-to-patient tips on disease management
  2. Defined or Restrictive Diets for IBD
  3. The Microbiome, Nutrition, and IBD

We look forward to sharing these perspectives and fostering a deeper understanding of IBD together.
