Ted Dinan Receives ACNP Award For Most Influential Review Article
The American College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ACNP) has named Ted Dinan as the winner of the 2018 Neuropsychopharmacology Editors Award for Reviews (also known as the NEAR). The award is intended to recognize and honor the top review paper published in Neuropsychopharmacology during the previous calendar year.
The prestigious award for his review “Microbes, Immunity, and Behavior: Psychoneuroimmunology Meets the Microbiome” Dinan TG, Cryan JF (2017) Neuropsychopharmacology Reviews 42: 178-192. The article outlines new insights on the relationship between the microbiome and behaviour, which is a cutting-edge area of psychiatry research. This emerging field is identifying previously unsuspected links between the microbes in the gut and complex behavior of their hosts, influencing mood regulation. These findings could ultimately lead to entirely new classes of medications for the treatment of aspects of neuropsychiatric disorders. It also eloquently teaches important concepts in an accessible way.
Ted is Professor of Psychiatry and a Principal Investigator in the APC Microbiome Ireland. He has worked in research laboratories on both sides of the Atlantic. His primary research focus is on immune and endocrine aspects of depression and irritable bowel syndrome. He has made significant contributions to literature on the regulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. He has published over 450 papers and numerous books on the pharmacology and neurobiology of affective disorders. The NEAR was presented at the 57th Annual Meeting of the ACNP in Hollywood, Florida.

The mission of ACNP is to further research and education in neuropsychopharmacology and related fields in the following ways: promoting the interaction of a broad range of scientific disciplines of brain and behavior in order to advance the understanding of prevention and treatment of disease of the nervous system including psychiatric, neurological, behavioral and addictive disorders; encouraging scientists to enter research careers in fields related to these disorders and their treatment; and ensuring the dissemination of relevant scientific advances.
