Dr. Sinéad Corr relocates research lab to UCC
APC is delighted to announce that Dr. Sinéad Corr, an Associate Professor in Microbiology, has relocated her research lab from Trinity College Dublin to our headquarters at University College Cork. This move marks an exciting new chapter for APC as we continue to expand our world-class research capabilities.
Dr. Corr brings with her a wealth of expertise in the study of the host-microbe interface within the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Her work, which spans molecular approaches, animal models, and clinical samples, is advancing our understanding of how healthy immune responses are maintained at the intestinal mucosal barrier. A key focus of her research is on inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), a debilitating condition affecting millions worldwide.
At APC, Dr. Corr will continue to lead her Microbiome & Mucosal Immunity Research Group, with a strong emphasis on translational research. Collaborating closely with clinicians and biopharma partners, her team aims to identify therapeutic strategies, novel dietary interventions, and environmentally-sourced natural bio-actives that can manipulate intestinal immunity and enhance the beneficial aspects of the gut microbiome. The ultimate goal of her work is to boost gut health and reduce the severity of intestinal infectious and inflammatory diseases.
Dr. Corr’s impressive academic journey began with a BSc in Microbiology and a PhD in Molecular Microbiology from University College Cork. She then gained invaluable experience during her postdoctoral work, collaborating with GlaxoSmithKline and the Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre (now APC Microbiome Ireland) and later with Prof. Luke O’Neill’s Inflammation Research Group at Trinity College Dublin. Throughout her career, Dr. Corr has been recognized for her contributions to the field, receiving prestigious awards such as the Science Foundation Ireland Starting Investigator Research Grant, the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America Litwin IBD Pioneer Award, and the SFI Frontiers for the Future Award, and being elected Fellow of Trinity College Dublin in recognition of scholarship and research achievement of a high order.
Dr. Corr’s return to University College Cork as Senior Lecturer in Microbiome Science at the School of Microbiology and her continued affiliation with APC is a homecoming that will further strengthen our research community. We are thrilled to have her and her talented team of young researchers on board as we continue to push the boundaries of microbiome science.
