Celebrating Science With Cork Science Festival And Cork Discovers 2020
Join us in celebrating science throughout the month of November. We’ll kick off with some great activities and events as part of Cork Science Festival during Science Week (8-15 November 2020). The action will continue with Cork Discovers for European Researchers Night (27 November ). Most of the action will happen online this year so don’t miss your chance to get involved.
Microbes for Starters
Science is better when we start together. So APC Microbiome Ireland, in partnership with Cork Discovers, are inviting people in Cork to start doing science with us. Together we will explore the incredible world of microbes and make a real contribution to science. In our first project, we’ll make some delicious yoghurt at home to start exploring the ways microbes help us every day.
Join the Microbes for Starters Facebook Group to request a free yoghurt-making kit*! https://www.facebook.com/groups/microbesforstarters
*Limited number of yoghurt-making kits available. You must be 18 years or older to join the Facebook group. Younger people may participate in the activity only with adult supervision.
Origami Microbe Teller
In this activity, you’ll create a paper Microbe-Teller. Like a paper fortune-teller, a Microbe Teller reveals answers to your questions about bacteria, fungi and viruses.
What do microbes look like? Where do they live? How small are they? Make a Microbe Teller to find the answers.

Public Webinar
“Can we shape our microbiomes through food and viruses?” is the topic of our Public Webinar being held Wednesday 11th November @4pm GMT.
“You are what your microbes eat!” Dr Susan Joyce will discuss some of the research we have been doing at APC Microbiome Ireland in deciphering how these microbial influences can be harnessed for health.
Bacteriophage: viruses that eat our microbes. Prof Colin Hill will talk about bacteriophages. He will discuss how we can potentially use these extraordinarily beautiful microbes to shape our microbiomes, and to improve human health.
Q&A: Dr Orla O’Sullivan will facilitate a Q&A to address all your questions.
A video of the webinar is now available to view on our YouTube channel at https://youtu.be/bFzPne3vwkE
