The Department of Physiology hosted the annual awards event at the close of the academic year on the evening of the viva voce examinations 19 May 2016. Prof James Jones (UCD) who served as external examiner for the BSc Physiology degree programme had an opportunity to meet several students including all prize winners. Congratulations to all students on a great performance in the examinations. We wish you all continued success into the future.

UCC hosted the annual meeting of the Royal Academy of Medicine in Ireland (Section of Biomedical Sciences) in June. Congratulations to Sarah Drummond who was awarded best poster prize.

David Burns (PhD trainee) organised a research symposium on Tuesday 26^th July as a satellite event in the run up to Physiology 2016, the joint meeting of the American Physiological Society and The Physiological Society in Dublin. 

UCC Professor of Physiology Ken O’Halloran and PhD Trainee David Burns visited the Himalayan mountain range on a high altitude scientific expedition to Mount Everest Base Camp in May 2016. 

The Department of Physiology hosted the Annual Meeting of the Section of Biomedical Sciences of the Royal Academy of Medicine in Ireland on Thursday 21st June 2016 at the Western Gateway Building, University College Cork.

Professor Ken O’Halloran travelled to Brazil in August, which will next year host the International Union of Physiological Sciences (IUPS) 38th World Congress in Rio de Janeiro. 

Professor Ken O’Halloran was invited to speak at a strategic workshop organized by the Brazilian Physiological Society held on Thursday August 25^th 

Dr Mark Rae and his PhD student Aidan Karr attended the XIV International Meeting of the European Calcium Society in Valladolid, Spain (Sept 25th -29th). Aidan presented a poster entitled ‘Evidence for Altered Calcium Homeostasis and Bcl-2 Expression in Cultured Hippocampal Neurons in Young (<6 days) Rodent Models of Alzheimer’s Disease (3xTg AD Mouse & TgF344-AD Rat)’.

The Department of Physiology, University College Cork celebrated Physiology Friday on October 14^th, in conjunction with The Physiological Society, as part of an international series of events during Biology Week.
