The School of Pharmacy is delighted to host the upcoming COLOTAN Symposium, Targeted Drug Delivery in the Gastrointestinal Tract: Current Status, Emerging Techniques and Blue Sky Thinking on Wednesday January 10^th 2024 in the Pharmacy Building, UCC with a range of different speakers from industry and academia.

The UCC Entrance Scholarship Awards Ceremony for the College of Medicine and Health took place in the Devere Hall, Student Centre on Monday, 27 November, followed by a reception of the awardees and their families in the Hub.

Many congratulations to MPharm student Dan Beechinor who has been awarded the 2023 Dr HH Stewart Health Sciences Prize in Pharmacy from the National University of Ireland (NUI) at their awards ceremony in Croke Park.

The Irish Medication Safety Network (IMSN) hosted their annual Conference, themed 'Smarter technology for a safer tomorrow', in the Aula Maxima, University College Cork on Friday November 24th. 

The School of Pharmacy ‘went Blue’ and hosted a healthy coffee morning to promote World Antimicrobial Awareness Week 2023 and raise awareness of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). 

Staff and students from the School of Pharmacy were active participants at the 10th All Ireland Pharmacy Conference (AIPC) held at Ballymascanlon House Hotel in Dundalk on the 6th and 7th November 2023.

UCC Pharmacy Society has launched a new series of live Perrigo Podcasts, where Chairperson Conor McCarthy will discuss topics of relevance to pharmacy students with various guest speakers in a series of ongoing episodes.

In a celebration of academic excellence, the Quercus College Scholarships at the University College Cork's College of Medicine and Health recognized outstanding students who achieved top marks in the Summer 2023 CoMH examinations.

Clara Heinrich, recently successfully defended her doctoral thesis entitled “Deprescribing for frail older adults residing in long-term care facilitates: a mixed-methods study”.

Boots sponsored the 86th edition of the British National Formulary (BNF) for each UCC first year pharmacy student. The books were presented to the students by Lisa Buckley, Boots Teacher Practitioner, UCC. The students were delighted to receive their new books. They will use the BNF extensively during their studies at university and after graduation. 

UCC researchers led by Dr Sonja Vucen, School of Pharmacy and Dr Anne Moore, School of Biochemistry & Cell Biology have joined an international consortium which is collaborating to develop a vaccine to address the most widespread form of human malaria.

On 11 October 2023, the School of Pharmacy was delighted to welcome Mr. Jack Kavanagh, one of Ireland's leading speakers focusing on Mental & Emotional Wellbeing and Diverse Abilities as our keynote speaker at the 2023 School Assembly.

Over the last three weeks MPharm students have welcomed numerous external speakers during workshops relating to the management of Type 1/Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus as part of module PF6400 (Clinical Pharmacy Practice II).

On Thursday, 21st September, Ayat Elgammal won the PCCA prize for the best poster presenter at the 15th conference of the European Paediatric Formulation Initiative (EuPFI) in Glasgow, UK.

The School of Pharmacy, UCC held its annual Prize Giving Ceremony on 11 September 2023 as part of the School's annual Business Seminar, with faculty, sponsors, and visiting speakers gathering to recognize the hard work of 5th year pharmacy students.

On Monday 11 September, the School of Pharmacy was delighted to host the MPharm Business Seminar.

On 26th September 2023, Prof Brendan Griffin, Head of School of Pharmacy, and Prof Stephen Byrne, Deputy President and Registrar, represented University College Cork at the graduation ceremony of students of the Pharmacy degree which is jointly developed and delivered by staff of Futures University in Egypt (FUE) and University College Cork. Also in attendance was Ms Nuala O'Brien, Ambassador of Ireland in Egypt.

We are excited to announce the launch of the new MSc in Industrial Pharmaceutical Sciences, Operations & Management in partnership with iED hub. This unique one-year full-time taught masters programme is designed to maximize graduate employability in the biopharma and pharma industries.

We were delighted to host online orientation sessions for the incoming first-year MSc Pharmaceutical Technology and Quality Systems MSc Clinical Pharmacy students. We look forward to an exciting and challenging year ahead.

Our second annual Pharmacy Research Day, held on Friday 5 September 2023 in the Pharmacy Building, highlighted the impressive research and talent within the School of Pharmacy.

From June 26th-July 7th UCC School of Pharmacy hosted a 2-week summer school for FUE Students.

Professor Caitriona O'Driscoll, Chair of Pharmaceutics in the School of Pharmacy, has been appointed to the Expert Taskforce to Support the Expansion of the Role of Pharmacy.

The Taskforce, which was established by Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly, will examine how pharmacists can be better used in the healthcare system.

Former undergraduate student Hannah Cleary received SURE funding in 2021 with Dr Erin Crowley for a project that was completed in collaboration with Prof Aideen Sullivan and Dr Lucy Collins-Stack of the Dept of Anatomy and Neuroscience, UCC and James Diskin and Donna Kitt of Corrib Physio, Galway.

College of Medicine and Health's Learning and Teaching Showcase, held 16 June 2023 in the Pharmacy Building, featured two presentations by School of Pharmacy academics that highlighted progressive approaches to student learning.

The Pharmacy Equality Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Committee hosted a delightful summer celebration on 8th June 2023, at the Pharmacy Building, promoting a strong sense of unity among researchers and staff from the School of Pharmacy, School of Biochemistry, and the Analytical & Biological Chemistry Research Facility (ABCRF).

University College Cork (UCC) celebrated its exceptional researchers at the 2022 UCC Research Awards, held on 1 June 2023. 

In a captivating presentation, Shannon Nally sheds light on her groundbreaking research, which delves into the prospective clinical and economic effects of pharmacists prescribing chemotherapy regimens.

Staff in the School of Pharmacy took part in a strategy day on Thursday 26 April 2023, with Hugh O’Donovan. 

As the term of the current School of Pharmacy’s PharmSoc Committee, under the stewardship of Chairperson Gráinne Barrett, comes to an end on 31 May next, it is appropriate at this stage in the academic calendar to highlight some further student experience initiatives that PharmSoc organised for its fellow colleagues during the academic year.

On Tuesday, 21 March last, PharmSoc (UCC’s Pharmacy Society) hosted a Community Pharmacy Exhibition in the Pharmacy Building, where a variety of exhibitors were invited to showcase their community pharmacy-relevant products, devices and services in a very informative and education session with the School’s undergraduate pharmacy students.

On Wednesday 3 May 2023, the School of Pharmacy hosted Dr Paul McCague, who presented his talk titled "Transforming the MPharm for Future Pharmacists". The talk highlighted the exciting reforms in the UK pharmacy curriculum including the embedding of pharmacist prescribing in the undergraduate programme.

Congratulations to UCC MSc student (2022) Eileen Whittle, pharmacist at St Vincents Hospital who was awarded 1^st prize in the research category at the recent Hospital Pharmacists Association of Ireland (HPAI) conference.

On Wednesday, 29 March as part of PF3009, 3^rd years were fortunate to be delivered a guest lecture entitled “Introduction to Sexually Transmitted Infections”. This lecture was delivered by Dr Suzanne Cremin.

Congratulations to Dr. Kieran Walsh, MPSI, Senior HTA Analyst (HIQA) and Adjunct Clinical Senior Lecturer (School of Pharmacy UCC) on being been inducted into the newly formed Young Academy of Ireland (YAI) of early-career researchers and innovators.  The YAI consists of forty members from Ireland and Northern Ireland and members were selected after a competitive recruitment process launched by the Royal Irish Academy last year. 

A collaborative research programme led by Dr. Tim O’Sullivan and Prof. Cormac Gahan has resulted in the discovery of potent compounds which target resistant, pathogenic bacteria.

Congratulations to Shannon Nally for winning the best poster prize at this year’s European Association of Hospital Pharmacists (EAHP) 2023 Congress in Lisbon on Friday 24^th March for her study titled ‘Evaluating the potential clinical and economic impact of chemotherapy prescribing by pharmacists at a university teaching hospital’.

Congratulations to Rebecca Clarke and Shannon Nally (not pictured), who both received the prize for achieving the highest aggregate score in the programme for class 2020-2022 at the Spring Conferring Ceremony, University College Cork, on Wednesday 29 March 2023.

On Monday last, 13 March, the UCC STARS Awards took place in the Metropole Hotel, Cork.

The STARS Awards Ceremony is an annual event hosted by UCC Societies’ Executive to acknowledge the outstanding drive, commitment and work ethic of UCC students from all disciplines within UCC Societies. UCC is home to over 110 societies, from charitable societies, to linguistic societies, to everything imaginable between.

To mark Seachtain na Gaeilge (SnaG),we rebranded the Pharmacy Building with bilingual labelling. Throughout the week, numerous poster boards have been placed throughout the school to encourage staff and students to incorporate cúpla focail (a few words) into their daily conversations. Common Pharmacy terms and phrases have been translated.

We were delighted to welcome Irish Kidney Association representatives Sheena McDonagh and Pat O'Sullivan to the School of Pharmacy for World Kidney Day to talk with students about kidney disease and transplantation. 

On 17th January 2023, the  All-island Vaccine Research and Training Alliance (AIVRT) held its inaugural meeting at University College Dublin (UCD). Among those in attendance were Dr Laura J Sahm, Dr Aoife Fleming, School of Pharmacy and Dr Anne Moore, School of Biochemistry and Cell Biology University College Cork.

AIVRT is a four-year alliance that brings together researchers from University College Cork, Queen's University Belfast, University College Dublin, and Trinity College Dublin to improve human health through vaccination. The organization aims to collaborate and share resources to advance vaccine research and training across Ireland.

The meeting provided an opportunity for the researchers to discuss their shared goal of improving human health through vaccination and to plan future collaborative projects. It's a great step forward to the future of better human health through vaccination on the island of Ireland.

On Saturday, the 11 February last, PharmSoc held the annual Pharmacy Ball in Cork’s Clayton Hotel, Silversprings. With over 300 individuals in attendance, the ballroom was alive with both students and staff of the School! The theme of this year’s ball was the 60’s, reflected in the ballroom being decorated with colourful balloon arches, Elvis cardboard cut outs and John Lennon sunglasses. The evening’s festivities began at 6 pm, with students mingling with their own cohort year groups and with students in other year groups within the pharmacy programme, followed by dinner at 7 pm. Afterwards, it was time for the highly anticipated annual Pharmacy Ball awards, hosted by PharmSoc chairperson Gráinne Barrett, vice-chairperson Emma Crowley, and first year coordinator/welfare officer Conor McCarthy. The first of the awards presented for the night was the School of Pharmacy’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) award which was awarded to Des Lee in third year. The rest of the awards followed with Professor Abina Crean notably winning faculty member of the year! The afters guests arrived at 9 pm at which point Cork band UV5 provided entertainment for the rest of the evening.

Students showed off their culinary skills on Pancake Tuesday 2023.

An interprofessional learning initiative between pharmacy, speech and language therapy and dietetics students, exploring the management of patients with various forms of swallowing difficulties, kicked off last week in the School of Pharmacy.  Students from all three disciplines learned from, with and about one another whilst working collaboratively within teams. Each team focussed on a specific patient case e.g., a patient who had Parkinson’s Disease and Dementia and the challenges of administering food, liquids and medicines to this patient in a safe and appropriate manner. Staff facilitated these discussions and students gained a comprehensive understanding of the unique but also common roles each healthcare professional has to offer towards the management of patients with swallowing difficulties.

The iEd Hub through the School of Pharmacy and Cork University Business School are delighted to announce the launch of a new 1-year postgraduate MSc programme in Industrial Pharmaceutical Sciences, Operations and Management. This unique multi-disciplinary programme covers the technical, quality, regulatory skills required to work in the (bio)pharma industry as well as the management, leadership and transversal skills required in the workplace. 

The School of Pharmacy was delighted to host the ‘Pharmaceutical Quality and Regulatory Science Symposium’ in the Pharmacy Building, UCC on 7 December 2022. The theme of this year's meeting was ‘Addressing the quality and regulatory challenges of emerging drug products’.
