Undergraduate Students

The Department of Paediatrics and Child Health is a vibrant facility that offers student-centred teaching and research opportunities. Each year, around 400 undergraduate students complete four-week attachments under the department's guidance in the DEMIV/GEMII and DEMV/GEMIV Medicine programs. Teaching takes place at six different sites, including Cork University Hospital, Mercy University Hospital, Bon Secours Hospital Cork, University Hospital Kerry, Waterford University Hospital, and Tipperary University Hospital, providing students with valuable learning experiences in a clinical environment.

Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturers lead the teaching on these sites, which includes a comprehensive teaching program, including lectures, clinical simulation practice, small group bedside teaching, and tutorials. During their attachments, students learn from clinical teams in a hospital-based environment, with learning encouraged on ward rounds and outpatient clinics. DEMIV/GEMII medical students gain experience in the NICU and community care by attending community-based clinics, while DEMV/GEMIV students gain experience while final year students are attached to different clinical sites where they further develop their knowledge, skills and attitudes (including clinical skills, clinical acumen, and professionalism) in the practice of Paediatrics.
