Global Hunger Today Conference 10 - 11 May

The Centre for Global Development at UCC is held a major conference on Global Hunger Today: Challenges and Solutions, on 10 -11 May 2018. This event was held in conjunction with the National Famine Commemoration taking place in UCC, which commemorates a traumatic period in Ireland’s past.

Famine and chronic hunger exist across much of the world today, posing a major challenge for global development and human rights. Ireland’s historical experience, and prominent role in addressing contemporary food security issues worldwide, provide a strong basis for developing new approaches to overcoming an age-old problem. The conference addressed multiple aspects of contemporary global hunger and the challenge of achieving the Sustainable Development Goal of food security for all.

Speakers included world-renowned experts on food security, famine and humanitarian crises including Professor Alex de Waal of Tufts University, Dr Shenggen Fan, Director General of IFPRI, H.E Dr. Eyasu Abraha Minister of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Ethiopia and Professor Cormac Ó’Gráda, Professor Emeritus of Economics, UCD, as well as development practitioners from multilateral agencies and from Irish development organisations addressing food security.
