Irish Latin American Studies Association Conference, 18 June

On Saturday next, 18 June 2005,  UCC hosts the second annual conference of the Irish Latin American Studies Association.  Organised by UCC's Department of Hispanic Studies, the conference will bring together speakers from UCC, Dublin City University, University College Dublin, University of Ulster, Coleraine, National University of Ireland, Galway and Dublin Institute of Technology.  The programme will include papers from areas as diverse as performance art, philosophy, social anthropology, political science and literature.

The Irish Latin American Studies Association was established in 2004 at a gathering of teachers, students and researchers from all disciplines working in Irish universities.  This is the first association of its kind in Ireland and it aims to foster links and increase collaboration between all researchers involved in work on Latin America in Ireland.

The special guest speaker this year is Professor Philip Swanson from the University of Sheffield who will give a paper on Latin America's biggest selling writer, Isabel Allende.  From Chile, but resident for many years now in the United States, Isabel Allende is a commercial and critical phenomenon. Her most famous novel, La casa de los espíritus (House of the Spirits), is a romantic epic, full of magical realism, humour and fantasy which, at the same time, gives a vivid account of the coup d'état against Salvador Allende and the brutal excesses of the Pinochet regime. Professor Swanson is a leading international specialist in the field and has published numerous books on contemporary Latin American fiction. His current work on Allende compares the international and domestic reactions to this writer.

The conference takes place in the O'Rahilly Building, UCC commencing with Session I at 9.30 am and concluding with Session III at 3.00 pm. Admission is free and members of the public are welcome to attend. For details, please contact Dr Nuala Finnegan, nuala.finnegan@ucc.ie.
