‘Through an occupational lens: Looking inward, looking outward’ will turn the spotlight on "meaningful" occupation (Pictured: The Atrium, Brookfield Health Sciences Complex)

What exactly is a “meaningful” occupation? First Year Occupational Therapy students will offer their own answer to this question at an art exhibition on Wednesday 26 September at UCC.

The print and textile exhibition, entitled ‘Through an occupational lens: Looking inward, looking outward’, seeks to highlight how examining everyday activities, or “occupations”, can provide insight into self and the environment we live in.

Occupational Therapists (OTs) have a long history of using creative occupations to enhance the health and wellbeing of others.

The exhibition, jointly organised by the Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy and the Jennings Gallery, UCC, is the culmination of six weeks of work by students. They worked in tandem with the Cork Printmakers and Frances Leach of Cork Textiles Network, to create this unique take on our working world.  

Dr Karen McNulty, lecturer in the Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy, and co-ordinator of the exhibition, says, “As future OTs, first year students at UCC have seized the opportunity to immerse themselves in the creative process of textiles and printmaking. Through this engagement, they have experienced first hand the power and transformative effect of occupation, and in turn, we invite you to see the results of their efforts.”

The exhibition will launch on Wednesday 26 September at 5.30pm in the Jennings Gallery, located on the first floor of the Brookfield Health Sciences Complex, UCC. Refreshments will be provided.

This opportunity to reflect on the concept of occupation will continue until the 24 October.
