PhD Studentship in Digital Arts and Humanities - Project on Leonardo Sciascia

In the context of a new, structured PhD in Digital Arts and Humanities (see below), applications are invited for the following project at University College Cork, Ireland. Please note the very short deadline of 6 July 2011. Details of the application procedure are available on the DAH webpage.

From Local to Global: the national and international reception of Leonardo Sciascia

Leonardo Sciascia’s impact as a writer and political and cultural commentator extended beyond the bounds of his native Sicily in which his early works were rooted and has continued since his death in 1989 to the present day, with supporters and detractors still using him as a point of reference. The project aims to map his influence and reputation in spatial and temporal terms through the extensive critical, journalistic, artistic bibliography and audio-visual materials on him, and to create an innovative interface for interrogating that bibliography in order to develop an understanding of the reception of his works and their part in constructing Sicilian and Italian identity in general in an international context.

In addition to the institutions listed below in connection with the broader Digital Arts and Humanities project, this fellowship will involve collaboration with the Associazione Amici di Leonardo Sciascia ( www.amicisciascia.it), which is making available its existing, partial database, and with its annual journal of Sciascia studies, Todomodo, as well as with the Università degli Studi di Firenze, Italy. Applicants should have excellent English and Italian; a reading knowledge of other languages will be an advantage.

29.10.2011 - Forthcoming performance by the Italian actor Mario Pirovano

Italian Department, UCC

and the Italian Institute of Culture, Dublin, are delighted to present:

FRANCIS THE HOLY JESTER

-

LU SANTO JULLARE FRANCESCO

Written and directed by Dario FO

Performed by Mario Pirovano

Ó Riada Hall, Music Department, UCC

Tuesday, 29 November, at 7.30 p.m.

Mario Pirovano, interested as always in current affairs and problems, brings to the stage the themes of peace and war with Dario Fo’s ‘FRANCIS THE HOLY JESTER (Lu Santo Jullare Francesco)’.

It presents the famous and powerful speech delivered by Saint Francis in Bologna in 1222 as reconstructed by Fo based on popular tradition, records and personal accounts. The result is not a moralistic sermon but a fascinatingly ironic, poetic and at times sarcastic performance inspired by the jester tradition of the time.

Francis chose to address the audience with a jester-like interpretation of the speech by ironically employing the unique and universally understandable language of the jester composed of elements of Lombard, Sicilian, Umbrian and Neapolitan dialect combined with terms taken from Latin, Spanish and Provençal.

Since 1983 Mario Pirovano has been involved in productions of all of Dario Fo and Franca Rame’s works, in the varying roles of actor, assistant producer, stage director and simultaneous translator. The long years spent as an apprentice and his unique relationship with the Master have made Pirovano not only the most faithful interpreter of the theatre of Dario Fo, but also an impassioned and tireless populariser of the style and language which have made Fo famous throughout the world and earned him the Noble Prize for Literarure.

[This is a non-ticketed event, therefore please come early to the venue to avoid disappointment.  The performance will be in English]

HTML file  UCC announces Scholarships for students taking Italian and other languages

The President of University College Cork, Dr Michael Murphy, has announced a €250,000 scholarship scheme which will benefit students who perform well in this year's Leaving Certificate examinations, including those taking Italian and other languages at UCC. The Scholarships are part of a UCC response to reports by the Expert Group on Future Skills Needs, which identify future skills shortages in the Irish Labour Market and highlight the requirement for foreign language skills.

The College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences at UCC will offer scholarships to a number of students with the highest overall Leaving Certificate points who register for two or more foreign language subjects for the duration of their Bachelor of Arts degrees: this may be the three-year BA or the four-year BA Language and Cultural Studies Pathway, the Third Year of which is spent studying at a partner university (entry for both programmes is CK101, with selection for LCS on registration for Second Year). In addition to Italian, students can take French, German, Hispanic Studies and Chinese at UCC.

In the College of Business and Law, students registering on the BComm (International) with Italian [CK207] are amongst those eligible for scholarships.
