PhD Studentship, Department of Medicine
PhD Studentship, Department of Medicine
College of Medicine and Health
Applications are invited for a 3 year HRB-funded Ph.D. Studentship, commencing October 2007, to conduct research on the role of Fas ligand (FasL) in tumour development. Numerous studies have shown that human tumours express FasL, and have strongly implicated tumour-expressed FasL as a major inhibitor of the anti-tumour immune response (Houston A and O’Connell J, Curr Opin Pharmacol, 2004:4:321-6). The aim of this project will be to identify the key factors that underlie FasL expression in tumours, and to investigate if targeting this pathway by pharmaceutical intervention can reduce tumour development and growth. The mechanisms by which FasL promotes tumorigenesis will also be studied.
The studentship is open to candidates who hold an M.Sc. or a first or upper second class degree in a biomedical science subject and have a keen interest in oncology and immunology. Stipend is €16,000 plus fees. Applications, to include a covering letter, full curriculum vitae and the names and addresses of two referees should be sent to Dr. Aileen Houston, Dept. of Medicine, UCC, Clinical Science Building, Cork University Hospital, Cork, Ireland. E-mail: a.houston@ucc.ie
The deadline for applications is Friday 27th July 2007.
