The National Perinatal Epidemiology Centre in the Department of Obstetrics and Gyaecology & the Department of Epidemiology & Public Health

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in UCC in collaboration with Cork University Maternity Hospital has established the Anu Research Centre.  One component of the Anu Research Centre is the National Perinatal Epidemiology Centre.  The Departments of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Epidemiology & Public Health are based in the Medical School within the College of Medicine and Health at University College Cork.  The Department of Epidemiology & Public Health is one of the founding members (with the Royal College of Surgeons and Trinity College Dublin) of the Irish Health Services Research Consortium. Both departments have extensive involvement in teaching.

The University is located in Cork, the second largest city of the Republic of Ireland.  Cork is a port city, built in the valley of the River Lee, with coastline, hills and sandy beaches within easy reach.  The city has an international airport and also has car-ferry connections to the United Kingdom and France.

Applications are now invited for the above permanent position.  Applications are invited from candidates with a strong academic background in Perinatal or General Epidemiology, Biostatistics or a cognate discipline.    The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the research and teaching activities of the National Perinatal Epidemiology Centre and to attract external research funding.  The postholder will be a senior member of staff of the National Perinatal Epidemiology Centre and will be responsible with the Director for:

  • Collecting outcome data for the State’s maternity hospitals and collaborating with government agencies in same;
  • Evaluating this data, including, inter alia, data relating to
    • Pregnancy outcomes;
    • Maternal and Perinatal Morbidity and Mortality;
    • Birth defects;
  • annually publishing an analysis of national perinatal data;
  • developing postgraduate research projects and supervising doctoral students;
  • contributing to undergraduate medical programme and will take a lead role in the supervision and education of postgraduate students.

In addition to a significant leadership role within the National Perinatal Epidemiology Centre, the successful candidate will be expected to make a substantial contribution to the broader research/teaching agenda of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology working as necessary with colleagues in cognate disciplines in the Department, the College of Medicine & Health, the wider University and nationally.

The postholder will have a joint appointment in the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health (0.2FTE) with a remit to foster collaboration in research and teaching between the National Perinatal Epidemiology Centre and the Department.

Candidates must have a primary degree in a relevant discipline. In addition s/he will have a PhD in Epidemiology or BioStatistics or a cognate area. The candidate’s research profile should be based on an outstanding record of achievement in Perinatal Epidemiology, General Epidemiology or a cognate discipline. The appointee will have a successful record of supervising and mentoring students to PhD level, together with a track record of research funding and publications in the area of Perinatal Epidemiology, General Epidemiology, Biostatistics or a cognate discipline.

Salary Scale:  €99,287 - €116,607

Appointment will be made at a salary level appropriate to the experience of the candidate.
