Personal Public Servies Number(PPSN)
What is a PPSN
Your Personal Public Service (PPS) Number is a unique reference number that helps you access social welfare benefits, public services and information in Ireland.
Why do I need a PPSN
You will need a PPS Number if you need one to access public services and to pay tax. You will need a PPSN number and register your employment in order to avoid Emergency Tax.
What is Emergency Tax
Emergency Tax is an alternative basis of tax deduction. Income Tax and Universal Social Charge (USC) are deducted from your pay at the Emergency Tax rates by your employer. This happens in certain circumstances where your employer is unable to obtain a Revenue Payroll Notification (RPN) for you.
To avoid paying Emergency Tax, you need to:
- give your employer your Personal Public Service Number (PPSN)
- ensure your job is registered with Revenue.
You need to do this as soon as possible, so that your employer can request a RPN before your first pay day.
