In 2018 we introduced two new programmes to our Postgraduate Studies offering in the Centre for Gerontology & Rehabilitation. These programmes will provide healthcare professionals with the skills to expertly care for the person with dementia from diagnosis to end-of-life. I completed the MSc Dementia part time over 2 years so graduated in 2022. I was in the midst of it all when Covid hit!
I really enjoyed the course and it was so great to learn from my classmates and the lecturers. It added a lot to the job I'm in, and I loved it.
The lecturers are so easy going and are contactable at any time and their support was just second to none. They quickly adapted to online when Covid came and there was no break in support or course facilitation. I am the first ever graduate for the MSc Dementia from University College Cork, I am very proud to say!
I really enjoyed this course and it has helped me greatly to combine my clinical practice with the theory I learnt in the different modules. There was a good selection of modules to choose from and so you could tailor your module choice to your specific educational needs. In our busy work life’s the combination of online learning and in class teaching worked well giving you the opportunity to meet people on your course and share ideas but not having to attend class every week. If your area of interest you can be certain you will be supported and mentored by the dedicated academic team running the program. I left with a solid understanding of the value of research and a comprehensive ability to interpret it correctly.

I undertook the UCC MSC Dementia in Sept 2018 on a part time basis over two years. The course comprehensively covered all major aspects of dementia care and the range of optional modules allowed me to tailor my course for my own role. Lecturers were experienced clinicians, with practical day to day experience and they used real life scenarios and case studies. We had lively class discussions, resulting in a greater appreciation and understanding of the unique role each discipline has in supporting persons with dementia and their families. The tutors were experienced in their field and readily accessible to offer support advice and guidance. I would recommend this programme to any of my nursing and allied health professional colleagues who are interested in gaining greater knowledge and expertise in dementia care.

Bernadette Horgan-Edmead (Day Care Nurse Co-ordinator) MSc Dementia 2020

With a postgraduate degree 10 years previous in Gerontology, I wanted to specialise in dementia, and the MSc in dementia part time over two years provided this opportunity. The interdisciplinary student mix and approach to the MSc was very beneficial to my practice in influencing a more informed and holistic approach to care delivery. The highlight of the MSc for me was the support and mentorship by credible researchers to carry out a research project specific to my clinic area.

I found the course to be very enjoyable, with a good mix of teaching, small group discussion and independent learning. The various module options give you the opportunity to develop an interest in other areas related to dementia care. The course really helped develop my skills in research and data analysis, and in particular gave me confidence in undertaking academic writing. I would highly recommend it to healthcare professionals working with older people.
