Retirement of Professor Tom Cotter

11 Apr 2019
Invitation created for Professor Tom Cotter retirement. 'Janus' artwork by Anna Scanlan. Invitation design by Mary Heapes.

Professor Tom Cotter has worked in Biochemistry since 1995, when he was appointed as Chair and Head of Biochemistry.

Professor Cotter has been an outstanding Chair of Biochemistry- leading by example on all fronts. Professor Cotter had sustained success in winning research grants, publishing papers, massive numbers of citations, happy and successful PhD students and postdocs, surgical and other medical trainees.  Professor Cotter has won several prestigous awards for his research including the Boyle medal and has been highly active in National Bodies- the board of SFI, HRB panels, Irish Cancer Society as well as international organisations – ERC, EU etc. School staff, colleagues in other Schools and the various University offices hold Tom in great regard, not only for his achievements but also for the way he treats everyone with respect and fairness. Professor Cotter is one of the most popular lecturers we know - students recall the stories he tells in lectures for years afterwards.

A retirement function was held in the Aula Maxima on Wednesday, 10th April 2019 to acknowledge and celebrate Professor Cotters achievements. Professor Rosemary O’Connor made the introductory speech, Professor Mark Lawler from QUB gave an overview of Professor Cotter contributions to the world of cancer and Professor Luminita Paraoan from University of Liverpool presented on Professors Cotters contributions to eye research. Professor Cotter was presented with some gifts by Professor John O’Halloran and Professor Rosemary O’Connor, one of which was a portrait sketched by Anna Scanlon, PhD student School of Biochemistry and Cell Biology. This sketch was the brain child of Professor Tommie McCarthy, as he was aware of Professor Cotters admiration for the God Janus, a two-faced god of Roman mythology.

Thank you to the organising committee for running such an enjoyable event and to the sponsor for their support.

Wishing Tom a truly happy and wonderful retirement.
