The Biophysics and Bioanalysis has successfully advanced its research projects, particularly the SFI and IPIC (Irish Photonics Integration Research Centre) projects in the area of Biophotonics and sensors.

Traditional laboratory classes in science subjects require mobility, the use of both hands, fine motor control and good eyesight. This makes it very challenging for students with physical disabilities or visual impairments to complete practical classes. In fact, it may put such students off choosing STEM subjects in university in the first place.

We are delighted to welcome two new Academic staff, Dr Katja Burk and Dr Martina Yordanova to the School of Biochemistry and Cell Biology both of whom have been appointed as Lecturers.

We are delighted to welcome Dr. Carolyn O’Driscoll to the School of Biochemistry and Cell Biology team as our new Programme Co-ordinator, Higher Diploma in Design and Manufacture of Biopharmaceuticals.

After a two-year gap, a University of California (UC) Davis Summer Abroad program, led by Dr Kellie Dean, returned to UCC from 21 June – 27 July 2022.

Congratulations to Mark Leahy, BSc (Hons) Medical and Health Sciences, for being awarded the Irish Cancer Society Translational Summer Studentship 2022.

Dr Kellie Dean was successful in obtaining funding from the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD) – German Academic Exchange Service for a research stay at EMBL-Heidelberg to work in the Protein Expression and Purification Core Facility.

The School of Biochemistry and Cell Biology recently held a School Values and Culture Awareness and Training Day that was attended by staff and researchers.

Congratulations to Yvonne Brennan, School of Biochemistry and Cell Biology staff member who was presented with a Student-nominated Staff Award at the annual College of Science, Engineering and Food Science (SEFS) STEM Awards Ceremony.
