Dr Emer Morgan has published a paper in Ecology and Evolution entitled "Climate change impacts on potential recruitment in an ecosystem engineer".
14.05.2013

Climate variability and the rapid warming of seas undoubtedly have huge ramifications
for biological processes such as reproduction. As such, gametogenesis
and spawning were investigated at two sites over 200 km apart on the south
coast of Ireland in an ecosystem engineer, the common cockle, Cerastoderma
edule.

Dr Sharon Lynch has recently published a paper entitled "The occurrence of haplosporidian parasites, Haplosporidium nelsoni and Haplosporidium sp., in oysters in Ireland" in the Journal of Invertebrate Pathology.
23.05.2011

The phylum Haplosporidia is a group of obligate protozoan parasites that infect a number of freshwater
and marine invertebrates. Haplosporidian parasites have caused significant mortalities in commercially
important shellfish species worldwide.

23.05.2011

EUROSHELL will provide solutions to identified challenges that may constrain the transfer of knowledge to the shellfish sector and thus affect its sustainable development.

Dr Sharon Lynch has recently published a paper entitled "A previously undescribed ostreid herpes virus 1 (OsHV-1)genotype detected in the pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, in Ireland" in the journal Parasitology.
23.05.2011

Significant mortalities of the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, have been reported worldwide since the 1950s. The impact these re-occurring mortality events have had on the C. gigas industry has highlighted the necessity to determine the factors that may be causing these mortalities.

23.05.2011

Little is known about the biology of the softshell clam in Europe, despite it being identified as a potential species to culture for food in the future.

Minister for Agriculture, Food and Marine, Simon Coveney, visits the AFDC and School of BEES
15.08.2011

The AFDC and School of BEES has a long and distinguished history of research excellence in the areas of Aquaculture and Fisheries, Plant Science and Forestry, and these have the potential to support food and energy demand in sustainable ways. This research, according to Professor John O’Halloran, will help resolve the food energy trilemma where delivering more food from less land, which now competes with energy crops, may have major environmental consequences.  “With global populations growing rapidly, there are huge risks of food shortages and enormous environmental damage, and so we need new sources of food and higher yielding crops”, said Professor O’Halloran.
