UCC Hockey Update 19/03/24

Catch up on the latest news from UCC Hockey

The weekend started on Friday for UCC Hockey when the Mixed Hockey team played in their first Student Sport Ireland tournament at the Sport Ireland Campus. It was an early start with a bus from Cork to Dublin at 6.30am ! The team played a very strong Technical University Dublin side to start with and followed with competitive games against University of Limerick and Maynooth.

Division 2

Our Division 2 side played Loreto in the semi final of the Irish Junior Cup on Saturday at the Mardyke. It was a miserable day for both teams with torrential rain and less than ideal conditions for a cup game. Loreto took their first chance and scored in Q2. UCC battled and had 4 to 5 chances to equalise but unfortunately it was not to be. UCC were the better side on the day but couldn’t score when needed. The team have had a great season so far with a 2nd place standing in the Munster League, an IJC semi final and next Sunday a Munster Cup semi final against Ashton. Wishing them the best of luck next weekend.

Division 1

Our W1sts played their arch rivals Cork Harlequins in the Munster Senior Cup final on Patrick’s Day at Garryduff. It was a late start with a 5pm tip off. The students were slower off the start line but against the run of play scored first with an Abi O Mahony goal. Quins soon replied with a Joy Sampson goal. UCC settled more into the game and in Q3 a goal came from Robyn Murphy, to give them the lead once again. Joy Sampson found the net again for Quins and in Q4 Sampson made it a hat trick of goals to clinch the win and give Cork Harlequins the victory and become Munster Champions.

The W1sts play their rescheduled EY2 game against NUIG at the Mardyke this Thursday, 8pm tip off. A win will ensure a semi final place in the EY2 play offs. Fingers crossed. !

The Clubs and Societies Ball takes place this Thursday. Our Club Captain Rhona Lennox has been nominated for a Bene Merenti. Best of luck Rhona.

The club would like to wish our Division 5 coach Reece Hawtrey and St Angela’s College the very best of luck in the Kate Russell All Ireland Schoolgirls Finals this week. Matches take place this Thursday and Friday in Ulster.
