This weekend the W1sts got off the mark and took 4 points from 2 games, as they travelled North for games against Ards and Pegasus.
On Saturday they played Ards in Newtownards. Goals from twin sisters Jane and Sarah matched the 2 goals scored by Ards. With a draw at full time, a shuttle competition for a bonus point went UCCs way giving them their first points in the EY1 League.
On Sunday they played at Queens grounds against Pegasus. In a tight game the first goal came in the 60th minute when Pegasus scored from a penalty corner. UCC didn’t give up and battled to the bitter end with Micaela Sanderson scoring in the closing seconds to give the Cork side a second draw. Another shuttle competition with Faye Luby in goal for UCC, went the students way and they travelled home with their first points and goals in the season. Next weekend they play Pembroke at home, Saturday at the Mardyke 1pm tip off.
The men played their third league game of the season away to C of I C. With their new strip, sponsored by Conway Solicitors, the student side played much better than their opening game of the season. The team is taking shape and although they suffered a 2-0 loss the future bodes well for the team. Some good saves from Jamie Cronin and a couple of chances at the other end indicates the potential of this team. Their next game takes place against Ashton on Thursday in Ashton with a 830pm tip off.
Division 2 had no game this weekend but look forward to their Irish Junior Cup game next Saturday against CI Ladies up North. The team has a mix of established players from last season like Siri Forde and Aoife Cronin combined with some very promising 1st years like Ella Lehane, Isabelle Martin, Susie Nolan and Nicole Clarke. Best of luck Saturday !
Division 3 and 4 played in the Combined Division 3/4 Cup with a 2-0 win for Division 3 against Belvedere and a 0-0 draw for Division 4 against Limerick. Next weekend both teams have a weekend off and look forward to starting their respective leagues at the beginning of November.
Queen B Athletics will have their Pop Up Shop on the sidelines Wednesday evening.
