UCC Hockey Munster Indoor Champions

28 Jan 2025

Last weekend saw the first trophy coming back to the club this season. UCC women played in the Munster Indoor Championships on Sunday and came out eventual winners, beating Ashton in the final.

The team will represent Munster at the Super 6s next weekend in Dublin. The team was led by Micaela Sanderson who recently represented Ireland at an indoor tournament in Denmark. Indoor was very popular in Munster in the 1980s and 90s but has dwindled in latter years.  Munster Hockey are putting in great efforts to revive the game. An ideal game for this time of year, the game improves stick work and is a great add on to the outdoor game. Indoor hockey is strong in Leinster and Ulster and teams represent Ireland in European Indoor Club Championships annually.  Best of luck to the team next weekend.

Our Division 2 side hosted Pembroke Wanderers in the Irish Junior Cup. Conditions were not ideal with hail showers and cold winds. It was a good battle between both sides and it took a good goal from Pembroke through a corner routine to seal the victory. UCC had their chances but just couldn't convert. The student side still have plenty to look forward to with a run in the Munster Senior Cup, Examiner Cup and the Division 2 League and Cup. This weekend they play Bandon away in the Examiner Cup, tip off 12pm.

The Division 4 team played in miserable conditions at home to Blackrock on Sunday. In their previous meeting the students won 3-0 and were hoping for a similar comprehensive victory. However with the weather conditions and a determined Blackrock side, UCC came away with only a 1-0 win (goal from Poppy McKeown). A win is a win and keeps UCC near the top with a game in hand on league leaders Midleton, both on 16 points. This weekend the team are away to Tipperary on Saturday, tip off 10.30am.

Division 3 had a free weekend and look forward to playing Waterford away on Saturday at 4pm. This team still top the league, however Clonmel have a game in hand with 2 points less. It is all to play for.

The men's side are playing Midleton in the Cork Cup, fixture time and date still to confirmed for this weekend.

We also look forward to the Pre Match Lunch Club Fundraiser on Saturday before the EYHL game UCC v UCD. The teams will also battle it out for the Coffey Cup (see photo attached) which hasn't been played for since the late 1980s. Tip off is 2pm Saturday.
