Division 2 are Munster League Champions
Congratulations to the Division 2 Women's side who won the Division 2 Munster League after a 0-0 draw against Cork Wanderers on Saturday. The team has been unbeaten all season and with 3 games to go they cannot be caught by any team. They look forward to the Munster Hockey Division 2 Cup against Cork Harlequins on Sunday 15th February, tip off 12pm at the Mardyke.
The EYHL1 team travelled to Old Alex in Dublin on Saturday. In their last encounter Old Alex had a slim 2-1 win. It was a fast, frantic and nail biting game. Old Alex started off the better in the 1st quarter but the students soon got to grips with the match. Lauren Cripps scored from a penalty corner in the 57th minute. Laurna McHugh was player of the match playing a stellar game. Old Alex kept the pressure on until the end and scored through a penalty corner to equalise in the 63rd minute. FT 1-1, shuttles were then played for the bonus point. After the first round of shuttles it was 3-3. Another round of shuttles and Old Alex came out with the bonus point, winning 1-0 on shuttles. Next weekend UCC take on UCD in the Irish Senior Cup. UCC will be hoping for some revenge after being beaten in their last EY encounter. The match tips off at 1pm at the Mardyke next Saturday.
The Division 3 side were top of the league going into their match against Limerick on Saturday and a win was a must. It was a tough battle from the start. A green and yellow card for the students saw a feisty match and was end to end throughout. Limerick narrowly won 3-2. With Clonmel beating Limerick on Sunday, they now top the league with 20 points with a game in hand and UCC are a point behind. Still all to play for.
The men took on Bandon in the Munster Division 2 League on Saturday. It was a goal fest with the final score 4-5. Probably their best game this season so far for the students, they were unlucky not to get the win or draw. Goals came from Tejas Ghuge (2), Kyran Bryan and Sam Whyte O Callaghan. Player of the Match was Sam Whyte O'Callaghan.
The weekend finished off with Division 4 playing Midleton on Sunday in the Mardyke. It was a hard fought game and with goalie heroics in the Midleton goal, UCC found it hard to convert. A goal eventually came from Emer Bradley who worked her way along the base line and slotted the ball into the goal past the keeper. This win keeps the UCC side top of the Division 4 league. With all teams on 9 games, UCC are 2 points ahead of Tipperary, on 20 points. With 5 games still to go a lot can happen and with an away game to Crescent next weekend this will be a crucial game for the students.
