Intervarsity Hockey: Chilean Cup at Queens

20 Sep 2024

Read on to find out more about the latest news from UCC Hockey.

Last weekend saw the first serious competition getting under way when the Women's 1sts travelled to Queens for the Chilean Intervarsity Cup Tournament. Last season this competition did not take place and it was good to see its return.

There were 5 teams in the competition, hosts Queens, EY1 side UCD, Division 1 Leinster side Trinity, UL and UCC. UCC brought some newcomers Aine Power, Quercus Scholar, Bronagh O Shaughnessy, Beth Anne O Farrell, Faye Luby and Eabha Curran.

Day one our students played Trinity and got off to a great start with a 1-0 win, goal scored by Emma O Sullivan. UCC had an easy win against UL with goals galore.

On Sunday there was an early start against Queens with a 9.15am tip off. UCC scored early in the game with an interception by Emma O Sullivan. Queens, Ulster League winners last season, replied with 2 goals and took the win. The day finished with the final game of the tournament at 3pm against hot favourites UCD. A win for UCC was a must to take the cup. UCD wasted no time and scored in the first half. UCC had moments of good play but couldn't score. UCD scored 2 more goals in the 2nd half to win the Chilean. UCC won bronze and ideal preparation for their first EY1 game against Catholic Institute on the 28th September.

Men's Hockey

The big news of the week was in men's hockey when the team played their first game together in a friendly against Midleton in the Mardyke. It was a very promising performance and the men look forward to their first game against C of I B this weekend. Helen Costello has taken on the coaching role and has plenty to work with for the season. Match is at 2.30pm on Sunday in Garryduff.

Our 2nds play their first league game this season away to Ashton B. Catholic Institute who won last year have been promoted to Division 1 and this gives the 2nds a real opportunity and aim for promotion to Division 1. It will be an interesting season ahead for them. Their game takes place at 2.30pm on Saturday in Ashton.

Bruce College came on board as new partners with UCC Hockey last season. You can see their new pitchside hoarding at the pitch. A big thank you to all our partners who play a huge role in supporting the club.

It was Clubs Day on the 19th which gives the club an opportunity to attract new players to the club. Social Hockey was a very popular request and we look forward to getting that started when next Wednesday we will hold our Freshers Tournament on Wednesday 630-730 at the Mardyke and a social organised for after.

UCC Hockey would like to take this opportunity to welcome all new members to the club and wish all teams success over the season. For all new members please consult our club handbook which has all information to get you started.
