UCC hockey teams gear up for key games this weekend, including EYHL1’s clash with league leaders Loreto before the Christmas break.
This weekend sees the last game before Christmas for the EYHL1 team. They take on league leaders Loreto in the Mardyke on Saturday, tip off 1pm. After a disappointing 4-1 loss to Ulster Elks last weekend up North, UCC need to pick themselves up for the game on Saturday.
With 6 points on the table UCC are feeling the pressure of picking up more points. Some great hockey has been played by the students and it has been a steep learning curve at the top league. It will be a big challenge on Saturday with Loreto having many internationals playing for them this season. Former UCC Student, Caoimhe Perdue, will be wearing the wine of Loreto and will be keen to impress. But never under estimate the underdog title. Fingers crossed UCC can cause a shock before a deserved Christmas rest.
Division 2 had a 0-0 win against a dogged Cork Wanderers side last weekend. It was the old heads against the young heads. UCC dominated the game but with some good goalkeeping and defending from Cork Wanderers the students just couldn't score that one goal that would have won the match.
Two games remain for this team before Christmas. They play Clonakilty at home at 12.30pm on Sunday. In their last encounter earlier in the season UCC won 7-0. The team would expect to win and continue to dominate this Munster Division 2 league.
The men play C of I B this Saturday at 10.30am in the Mardyke. Unfortunately they were unable to field a team against Midleton last weekend. With exam and assessments due, it is a difficulty for the students turning out in force.
The Division 3 side had a tough 1-1 draw with Clonmel last weekend. It was a great game to watch and probably the fairest result in the end.
This weekend UCC play Bandon at home on Saturday, tip off 3pm. The team are hanging on to top of the league status, on goal difference. Bandon have had a couple of comprehensive wins so this game will be a good measure of where they are at as they approach the Christmas break.
The Division 4 side had a 3-1 win against Cork Harlequins last weekend. Going 1-0 down the students fought back with 2 fantastic short corner shots from Oonagh Grimley and the ever dependable Trudy O Loughlin scoring the third goal.
The team travel to Dungarvan with an under strength side. The exams are also having an affect on this team's turnout. This may affect their top of the league status after the weekend, as they have 10 points with a game in hand.
