Elmer Morrissey

Elmer Morrissey was a scientist, an athlete, a musician and an adventurer. He cared deeply about the world in which he lived. The Dr Elmer Morrissey Memorial Scholarship was set up to honour Elmer’s memory and provide financial assistance to UCC students who exemplify his spirit and intelligence.

In April 2012, Elmer was lost at sea during a sailing race off the California coast. Since then, his family and friends have continued to struggle with his absence. A year after his death, a few of his closest friends convened a scholarship committee and now, friends from both sides of the Atlantic are working together to maintain a legacy in Elmer’s name. The project provides a wonderful opportunity to create a tangible and lasting tribute to our great friend, Elmer Morrissey.

Elmer’s memory is also kept alive in UCC Hockey with the Elmer Morrissey Hockey Personality of the Year Award presented each year at the annual Hockey Ball. To read more about Elmer and his effect on those around him click here

Alan Martin

Alan Martin served as PRO in UCC Men's Hockey Club in the 1990s. He was a very popular member of the club and a great personality to have in the club. He unfortunately died from cancer in his final year of Commerce.

Maeve Hyland

Maeve Hyland played with UCC Hockey in the early 1960s. She was captain of the Senior team and a born leader. Maeve later got involved with the club in the 1990s and was President during that time. She organised a group of women who rowed in behind the women's club which helped give great stability to the student club. Maeve, a natural organiser, epitomises what a great clubperson is and hence naming this award after her.
