The UCC Ladies Hockey Club was sanctioned by UCC Governing Body on the 13th December 1909 making it one of the oldest hockey clubs in Munster, if not the oldest!

Before UCC Hockey had its pitch at the Mardyke it rented local pitches like Glasheen. With UCC granting playing pitches to the hockey club in the 1950s the club came into their own. In 1955 they hosted the Chilean Cup for the first time.

UCC Women’s Hockey competed in two university competitions, the Coffey Cup and the Chilean Cup. The former came into existence in 1918 and was played between the colleges of the NUI, namely UCC, UCD and UCG. UCC first won the cup in 1920. UCC went on to win the cup many times over the years until the cup was last played for in 1989. It was forgotten about until it was found in the trophy cabinet at the Mardyke Arena in 2023. The Chilean Cup, a competition open to all Irish Universities, has been played annually since 1936. UCC have won this competition on several occasions, first winning it in 1963.

The men’s club was founded in 1972. In 1995 UCC Men won the Mauritius Cup for the first time in their history. Their next win came in 2012. The club celebrated 50 years in 2022.

The College Rule/Presidents Rule, one in the same thing, was the rule that anyone who attended UCC must play their sport in UCC. This rule was difficult to enforce particularly coming into the late 1980s and 1990s and it was replaced by “a strong encouragement” to students to play for their college. Today this rule is long gone with many students remaining with their clubs. However it is always encouraged to play with UCC if you can, to play with your contemporaries is an opportunity not to be missed !
