Marcela Lagarde y de los Ríos Colloquium: Building a Transnational Feminist Coalition against Gender Violence

13 Jun 2023

13-15 June 2023

The Department of Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies, the Centre for Mexican Studies, and the Violence, Conflict and Gender research cluster hosted the celebration of the Cátedra Marcela Lagarde y de los Ríos colloquium, ‘Building a Transnational Feminist Coalition against Gender Violence’ between 13 June and 15 June 2023.

Comprising a series of round tables, panels and creative sessions, this 3-day, hybrid, bilingual event  opened up new spaces for academic communication, discussion and analysis of the concept of feminist solidarity and how to construct community-based intercultural coalitions across borders as part of the broader global struggle against gender violence. The Colloquium encouraged dialogue from a transnational perspective and fostered an international and interdisciplinary academic network dedicated to research into gender violence.

Among the many exciting panels, we were in conversation with Rosa-Linda Fregoso on her new book, The Force of Witness: Contra Feminicide (2023) and Marcela Lagarde y de los Ríos, who spoke on ‘Feminist Life and the Pandemic’.

As part of UCC's commitment to Ending Sexual Violence and Harassment in Higher Education and as we develop a strong policy framework, we also honoured the work of Mary Crilly, CEO of the Sexual Violence Centre, Cork who celebrated 40 years at the forefront of activism and change in this area.
