Simulation: The Missing Link in Health Innovation
Innovation only improves healthcare when it reaches patients safely. Simulation at the ASSERT Centre at University College Cork allows new technologies, clinical pathways and team practices to be tested before real-world implementation. It is a key part of the infrastructure needed to accelerate health innovation in the South West.
Simulation: The Missing Link in Health Innovation
Innovation in healthcare doesn’t succeed when a technology is invented. It succeeds when it can be safely implemented in real clinical environments.
As University College Cork celebrates Innovation Week, it is encouraging to see the growing focus on collaboration between healthcare, academia and industry across the South West. Ireland has a strong MedTech sector, world-class research and highly skilled clinicians. But one of the biggest challenges in healthcare innovation globally is translating new technologies and ideas safely into clinical practice.
This is where simulation plays a critical role.
At the ASSERT Centre, we work with clinicians, researchers and industry partners to create environments where new technologies, clinical pathways and team processes can be tested, refined and safely implemented before they reach patients.
Simulation allows healthcare systems to:
• Test new technologies with clinical teams
• Identify system risks before implementation
• Train clinicians in emerging procedures
• Evaluate new models of care and clinical pathways
As the region explores stronger collaboration through an Academic Health Sciences System, this type of infrastructure becomes increasingly important.
Academic Health Science Systems internationally rely on environments where innovation can be safely translated into clinical practice.
The South West already has many of the ingredients needed to build this ecosystem, strong healthcare services, leading universities, a vibrant MedTech industry, and clinical simulation infrastructure that connects them.
The opportunity now is to fully leverage these assets to accelerate safe healthcare innovation for patients and healthcare systems.
Looking forward to the conversations and collaborations emerging during #UCCInnovationWeek.
