Site Description

This historic site was originally established by St. Feichin in 623 AD and later became known as Cong Abbey in 1106. Visitors can explore the ruins of this 12th-century Augustinian abbey, which served as a learning centre for notable figures like Rory O’Connor, the last High King of Ireland. The abbey is renowned for its exquisite Gothic doorways and early gravestones. The site also features sculptures, including one of the infamous Curlew, and provides access to the beginning of Cong Woods. As you wander through the area, you'll discover labels on several of the ancient trees.
