Participants will be supported to reflect on research supervision through the lens of inclusion; the aim being to equip supervisors with the knowledge and skills necessary to foster inclusive supervisor-supervisee relationships. Topics covered include policy and procedure, pedagogies of supervision, epistemic justice and supervision, and preparing for the viva.
The module will run over 5 weeks and cover 3 strands of learning, including an overview of key concepts, policies and procedures; inclusion in the context of equality and diversity; and inclusive mentoring and supervision. Staff will be engaged in learning about the increasing significance of inclusion in higher education, policies and procedures in the context of inclusion, the relevance of inclusion to research supervision, etc.
State-of-the-art research will be contextualised using case studies of inclusive supervisory practice. Frameworks of supervision will be introduced and discussed (including the functional approach, enculturation, critical thinking, emancipation and relationship development).
Knowledge at the forefront of interdisciplinary fields will be utilized to equip staff to lead action to support inclusive supervisor-supervisee relationships (including the fields of epistemic injustice, psychological safety, workplace culture, self-determination theory etc). Staff will be introduced to the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL), as well as supported to contribute to SoTL research on the topic of supervision.
