50 Years on from the Chilean Coup

6 Sep 2023

On 6 September 2023, UCC SPLAS organised a commemorative event for the 50th Anniversary of the Military Coup in Chile, 11 September 1973.

This event was generously funded by the Centre for Advanced Studies in Languages and Cultures, the Latin American Solidarity Centre and SPLAS. The event started at 16:30 on the evening of Wednesday, 6th of September, with a screening of Nae Pasaran, described by The Guardian as “[A] heartfelt documentary from Felipe Bustos Sierra […] about the decency and moral courage of a group of Scottish Rolls-Royce workers and trade unionists. In 1974 the men downed tools, refusing to repair jet engines for the Chilean air force in protest against the bloody military coup that had toppled the government of Salvador Allende”.  Following this screening, we held a roundtable chaired by Dr Cara Levey (SPLAS), which included: Dr Anita Ferrara (Irish Centre for Human Rights, University of Galway), Dr Kate Quinn (Discipline of Spanish and Latin American Studies, University of Galway), Sara Helin-Long (SPLAS), Dr Céire Broderick (SPLAS).
