Undergraduate
Undergraduate Teaching and Awards in Obstetrics & Gynaecology at UCC
Undergraduate students complete a four week programme in reproduction, pregnancy, child health and development during the fourth year. In addition, they complete a placement in the principles and practices of obstetrics and gynaecology during their fifth year to apply the knowledge gained. Students are attached to either Cork University Maternity Hospital, or the maternity units of University Hospital Waterford, University Hospital Kerry or Tipperary University Hospital.
The objective is to develop sound knowledge of the theory and practice (including clinical skills) of obstetrics and gynaecology, with an understanding of, and sensitivity to, the needs of pregnant women.
Students shadow obstetric doctors performing their daily duties on the labour-ward, antenatal and postnatal ward as well as in obstetric and gynaecological clinics. Attendance at deliveries is also encouraged. Teaching is provided in small groups within clinics as well along the bed-side. In addition, classroom based learning sessions are a core element of the study.
As you can see from our testimonials below, students rate the programme highly due to strong clinical leads and excellent tutors providing ongoing feedback and assessment. Clinical support is also provided by doctors-in-training and midwives in a positive, student friendly atmosphere. Our administrative staff take the time to provide support and personal attention to our students.
Assessment includes formal written examination, continuous assessment, clinical examination and oral if required.
