Our Impact

Cancer affects one in two people during their lifetime, yet almost half of cancer cases are preventable. Early detection saves lives, and today over two in three people diagnosed with cancer survive for five years or more.

At the School of Nursing and Midwifery, University College Cork, the Educators and Researchers in Enhancing Cancer Awareness Survivorship Programme (ECASP) group is dedicated to improving cancer awareness, care, and survivorship. Our work aims to strengthen healthcare practice and enhance the lived experience of people affected by cancer.

Our research focuses on two key areas: promoting cancer awareness and supporting individuals throughout the cancer survivorship journey.

ECASP researchers have highlighted the physical and emotional challenges associated with cancer and its treatment including the long‑term and late effects of treatment that can impact health and quality of life long after cancer ends.

Building capacity is central to our mission. To date, ten doctoral students associated with ECASP have graduated, strengthening research leadership in cancer care. Since 2015, the MSc/Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing (Oncology) has supported the education and development of nurses specialising in oncology practice.

Our Aims

ECASP aims to generate high‑quality research that informs practice, policy, and education in cancer care by:

  • Advancing cancer awareness within the broader context of health promotion.
  • Supporting individuals with cancer and their families throughout the cancer journey through co-designed, needs‑based, targeted interventions.
