Research at the School of Nursing and Midwifery

The School of Nursing and Midwifery is recognised as a centre of research excellence in the region, fostering a vibrant, collaborative ecosystem that brings together research staff, graduate students, clinical partners, and patients. Our mission is to advance health and care through innovative, impactful research grounded in strong clinical and academic partnerships.

In recent years, the School has led major research initiatives, including two Horizon Europe grants as Coordinators—€7.5 million in 2024 to improve care for people with advanced dementia in nursing homes, and €6 million in 2025 to address the long-term effects of testicular cancer treatment in young survivors. Additionally, a €2.4 million HRB Applied Programme Grant is supporting national strategies to enhance breastfeeding support across Ireland.

Our research activity spans six internationally connected thematic programmes:

  • Enhancing Cancer Awareness & Survivorship
  • Mental Health and Wellbeing for the 21st Century
  • J.U.S.T.I.C.E in Healthcare
  • Maternity, Family and Primary Care
  • The CATALYST Centre for Safer Staffing and Healthcare Systems Research

These programmes are supported by a purpose-built Research Hub, which offers space for up to 17 researchers and a Creative Zone for collaborative work, including virtual engagement with global experts.

Ranked 27th globally and 6th in Europe in the QS World University Rankings, the School continues to be Ireland’s top-performing Nursing and Midwifery School on key research metrics such as citations and H-index.
