Times have certainly changed since the legendary visit in the eighth century of the poet Anér mac Con Glinne to the monastery of Cork, close to where UCC is located today. As a reward for complaining of the miserly welcome he received, and for composing a satiric poem to that effect, he was beaten, ducked in the river Lee, and condemned to death on the orders of the abbot. Happily he managed to avoid the ultimate punishment, and things improved for him thereafter.

Joanne. The new album title alone has personal significance for Stefani Germanotta, known professionally as Lady Gaga. Joanne is one of her middle names, and comes from an aunt on her father’s side who died of lupus long before Gaga was born. Her aunt Joanne is remembered, too, in the name of Gaga’s dad’s restaurant. 

President Bill Clinton coined the phrase ‘It’s the economy, stupid’. For President-Elect Trump it’s more a case of stupid economics. 

Last week, Ireland formally ratified the Paris Agreement on climate change.  The international treaty, already ratified by 103 countries, aims to reduce global greenhouse emissions and to avoid dangerous temperature increases.
