SHIELD

Description

SHIELD:  Intelligent Reflecting Surface for Enhanced Integrated Sensing and Communication to Protect Vulnerable Road Users

The SHIELD project aims to transform urban road safety by protecting vulnerable road users such as cyclists and pedestrians through advanced wireless technologies. Recognizing the limitations of traditional camera- and sensor-based systems (particularly in adverse weather and non-line-of-sight conditions) SHIELD introduces a novel approach that combines Intelligent Reflecting Surfaces (IRS) to extend signal coverage into blind spots and Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) to enable simultaneous data transmission and radar-like detection of users. The project focuses on advancing the theoretical foundations of IRS-assisted ISAC, developing robust communication protocols for dynamic city environments, and leveraging AI for real-time decision-making, all validated through simulations and real-world testbeds. Ultimately, SHIELD seeks to enable a fully collaborative ecosystem between infrastructure and vehicles, moving toward the goal of zero road fatalities in smart cities.
