nasc research Centre at University College Cork (UCC) is looking for two highly motivated Post-Doctoral Researchers. The researchers will be employed on a technology development project in which UCC collaborates with two companies, Danalto and Qorvo. The UCC part of the project focuses on the development of agentic AI and digital twin concepts for Ultra-Wideband (UWB) RF sensing, localisation, and vital sign recognition. The successful candidates will be working with a team of researchers on a range of topics, including artificial intelligence, RF sensing and communications, multimodal UWB RF signal data analysis, and wireless sensing network architecture design and optimisation. It is envisaged that the candidates will be located at University College Cork’s campus.

We are  looking for a Research Assistant to join the nasc research centre team for the above project. The researcher will be employed on a technology development project in which UCC collaborates with two companies, Danalto and Qorvo. Project Title:  SHIELD: Intelligent Reflecting Surface for Enhanced Integrated Sensing and Communication to Protect Vulnerable Road Users

Congratulations to Mohamed Seliem, Utz Roedig, Cormac Sreenan and Dirk Pesch’s paper entitled "Towards Diagnosable TSN: Preliminary Fault Localization Using Timing and Replication Observables" which received the Best Paper Award at the IoTIME workshop, co-located with IEEE WoWMoM, held in June 2026, Bologna, Italy.

Tengfei Lyu presented his paper “Quality over Quantity: Value-Driven Distributed Congestion Control for the Collective Perception Service” at the IEEE Vehicular Networking Conference (VNC) in Montreal, Monday June 8^th. Tengfei is supervised by Dr Aisling O’ Driscoll, Prof Dirk Pesch and Dr Md. Noor-a-Rahim.

Nasrin Shamaeian presented her paper “Machine Learning Based Hybrid Trust Framework for Misbehaviour Detection in Vehicular Communication Networks” at the IEEE Vehicular Networking Conference (VNC) in Montreal, Tuesday June 9^th. Nasrin is supervised by Prof Dirk Pesch.

Both Tengfei and Nasrin are Advance CRT students associated under the nasc research centre.

Congratulations to Tengfei Lyu who was recognised with a University College Cork Best PhD Student of the Year Award - the Oscars of the UCC Research calendar!

The Evaluation Criteria for Research Excellence included

• Published outputs: Quality and quantity of publications, conference presentations, or other research outputs.

The award is richly deserved and reflects not only Tengfei's excellent research on collective perception systems, but also the dedication and creativity he brings to his work every day.

 Congratulations to Qamar Usman who won a Best Paper Award for the paper he presented: “Towards Green O-RAN: A QoS-Aware Energy Optimisation Framework for Network Slicing” at the IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC) workshop on Open Radio Access Networks (O-RAN), May 24^th.

Dr Aisling O’ Driscoll visited the Telecommunications Institute at the University of Aveiro, Portugal where she gave a talk entitled “From Connectivity to Cooperation: V2X Enabled CCAM”.

Qamar Usman, a 3^rd year research PhD student under the supervision of Dr Aisling O’ Driscoll and Prof. Cormac Sreenan, and funded through the Advance CRT, has commenced a 3-month research placement at I2CAT in Barcelona. 

Dr. Mohamed Seliem recently participated in The AI Telco Troubleshooting Challenge, an international competition exploring the use of AI and large language models for telecom network troubleshooting and root-cause analysis. Well done to Mohamed who finished among the top 10 participants, making the challenge a valuable learning experience at the intersection of AI and communication networks.

Congratulations to Tengfei Lyu who was the recipient of a Student Travel grant award from the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society (VTS) when he recently attended the 102^nd IEEE Vehicular Technology Conference (VTC-Fall) in Chengdu, China. The award was granted based on the merits of the application and the quality of the accepted paper.

PERCeiVE (deriving PERceptual Confidence in cooperative Vehicular Environments) (CONNECT2-T4) will address the challenge of determining believe/confidence in cooperatively shared environmental perception data so that it can be trusted to make a control decision. Cooperative or collaborative perception is widely viewed as the panacea to truly realise autonomous driving, particularly in complex urban environments.

The thesis proposed a novel technique for an IoT device (that uses cellular Narrowband IoT communications) to detect attacks which target certain important system messages.

THE Cork Smart Gateway is an initiative which seeks to promote and develop Cork as a smart and innovative region. They joined forces with Cork City Council and two of Cork’s leading representative groups - the Cork Business Association and the Victorian Quarter (VQ) - to launch a pilot project which will help deliver insights into the use of key streets in Cork city.

Congratulations to Mohamed Seliem on successfully defending his PhD research thesis. Mohamed has completed his BSc and MSc at Cairo University.

Professor Cormac Sreenan has been recognised as being amongst the best computer scientists in Ireland.
