Irish Gerontological Society (since 1989). I was IGS secretary for 2 years (Sept. 2000 – Sept. 2002) and organized the IGS Golden Jubilee conference in UCC (Sept. 20th & 21st, 2002), attended by over 250 delegates, as well as the annual IGS conference in Dublin in 2001.
British Geriatrics Society (since 1990). I have been a member of the BGS Cardiology Special Interest Group (SIG) since 1998 and a member of the BGS Drugs & Prescribing SIG since 1996, serving on the later SIG committee from 1998 –1999.

Additional Role: Consultant Physician in Geriatric Medicine to Cork University Hospital and St. Finbarr’s Hospital, Cork.
Current Duties:
- Care of acutely ill elderly patients and their post-acute rehabilitation.
- Specialist consultation on in-patients and out-patients at CUH and St. Finbarr’s Hospital, Cork.
- Organisation and delivery of undergraduate ward-based clinical teaching in Geriatric Medicine.
- Lectures to 4th and final year medical students; also, annual lectures to pre-clinical students on physiology of human ageing.
- Supervision of research programme involving specialist and non-specialist registrars in Geriatric Medicine in CUH.
- Teaching of pre-registration intern doctors and doctors preparing for the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (RCPI) membership examination has been part of my schedule since 2000.
- Chairmanship of the Elderly Services Division for CUH and St. Finbarr’s Hospital (since February, 2004); this role involves co-ordination of specialist hospital services for elderly patients in collaboration with a Nurse Services Manager and a Division Business Manager.
