The Development of an Academic Health Sciences System

27 Oct 2023
Prof David Burn and Prof Helen Whelton with CoMH Staff and Healthcare Staff

We were delighted to welcome Professor David Burn to UCC.

Professor David Burn, Director, Newcastle Health Innovation Partners (NHIP), and Pro Vice Chancellor Medical Sciences, Newcastle University, visited UCC on 26th October to engage in meetings regarding the Development of an Academic Health Sciences System in our Region.

David began the day by meeting with the UCC/SSWHG Integrated Research Governance Steering Group and Project Delivery Team to discuss and analyse the groundbreaking work that has been done by this group over the past two years with respect to enabling research between UCC and the hospital group. The key aims of this group are:

  • Developing a Memorandum of Agreement between the S/SWHG and UCC for Integrated Patient Focused Research.
  • Establishing an operational structure to allow both entities to work together through a combined research board and patient focused research office.
  • Improvement of research, its management, governance, and better healthcare outcomes for patients.

At a national level, the Chief Academic Officer group, a group chaired by Professor Helen Whelton, Head of College of Medicine & Health UCC and Chief Academic Officer SSHWG, is working towards developing integrated academic healthcare for the Irish population (underpinning Sláintecare) using the Academic Health Sciences System model.

The Impact of an Academic Health Sciences System: The Newcastle Experience

David spoke to a wider group of CoMH Staff, students and Healthcare staff in our region, with a fascinating lunchtime seminar titled "The Impact of an Academic Health Sciences System : The Newcastle Experience" hosted by Prof Whelton. The talk provided a unique insight into the benefits and real lived impact of an Academic Health Science Centre, and highlighted the importance of including this approach within our Health Regions.
