Course Outline

Study of the concepts, practice of governance of coastal and marine environments, including coastal zone management and marine spatial planning, MPA frameworks and marine innovation An examination is made of the key concepts and approaches to the management of complex marine and coastal systems in the context of the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These approaches are linked to the more detailed study of the development of coastal zone management and of marine spatial planning practices and techniques, across system scales, and the design of integrated coastal zone management plans. 

 

On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:

  1. Identify the key concepts and understanding in the fields of coastal management, sustainability science, ecosystem-based management and related environmental management and planning.
  2. Demonstrate how the principles and practice of coastal and marine governance may be applied according to best practice.
  3. Demonstrate analytical, writing, communications and reporting skills.

This microcredential is part of a suite of six 5-credit microcredentials which can be stacked towards a Postgraduate Certificate in MetOcean for Offshore Wind. 

You can choose to take any of these microcredentials individually, or if you successfully complete all six microcredentials within three years of starting your first microcredential, you will be awarded Postgraduate Certificate.

Additional Teaching Mode Information

Delivery Online - Tuesday 9.15 – 10.45 am

  • This is an online lecture-based module with all lectures recorded’.
  • 11 by 1.5 hour lectures.

Assessment:

Assignment 2 x 2,000 word reports (50 marks each) 100. 

Reports are based on work related examples.

Why Choose This Course

Upon successful completion of this programme, you will have a clear understanding of the theory, principles and concepts that underpin the management of coastal and marine spaces; will have practical skills to equip them for making policy, and for taking management-level decisions, regarding the strategic and operational use of coastal and marine spaces; will know how to work with coastal and marine data originating in a range of scientific disciplines (physics, biology, geology, oceanography, etc.); and will have a good scientific understanding of the physical, environmental and human processes that affect, and are impacted by, the world’s oceans. The frame of reference will range from the global to the local, but with particular emphasis on the sustainable development and management of Ireland’s coastal and marine territories and resources.

 

 

Requirements

Programme Entry Requirements:

Applicants should hold a primary degree (min. Second Class Honours Grade II) in a primary honours degree (NFQ, Level 8) (180 ECTS credits or equivalent) from a recognized third-level institution, in Geography, Geology, Environmental Sciences, Biology, Oceanography, Physics, Mathematics, Engineering or a related discipline. 

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):

Those who do not meet the above requirements may be eligible to apply with recognition of prior learning. Applications will be considered from graduates in other disciplines, including those in the Arts or Social Sciences, who have a demonstrable interest and/or experience in the coastal and marine industry, and who can offer sufficient numerical abilities.

If you wish to apply via RPL, you must select 'Yes' to the RPL question when completing your application in UCC Apply.

  • As part of the application, you will be required to submit: 
    • A Personal Statement outlining your motivation for applying and detailing relevant work or life experience.
    • Any other relevant supporting documentation evidencing your prior learning - please refer to the RPL Learner Guide for details on appropriate evidence.

Programme Fee:

The full programme fee is €900. If you are not eligible for the below funding the course fee is €900.
