Outline

Module Objective: To examine the key decisions in development, design, delivery and analysis of clinical trials.

Module Content: Historical development of clinical trials, phases of clinical trials, design and assessment of clinical trials, practical considerations of clinical trials, issues in the conduct of clinical trials.

On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:

  1. Illustrate the historical development and its impact on the conduct of clinical trials.
  2. Examine the methodological considerations of formulating a clinical research question.
  3. Explain the importance of research objectives and outcomes in the context of clinical trial design.
  4. Describe the phases of clinical trials and the requirements for their conduct.
  5. Examine the practical considerations of the conduct of clinical trials.
  6. Develop the skills of reading a research paper
  7. Critically appraise a RCT research paper

This programme will be delivered wholly online. As such, there are specific technical requirements that you need to meet.

  1. You will need access to a laptop or desktop (either Mac OS or Windows) running a relatively recent operating system (Windows 7, 8, 8.1, 10 or Mac OSX 10.8, 10.9, 10.10 or later). UCC supports access to the Canvas Virtual Learning Environment through IOS and Android apps, which are available from the respective App stores.
  2. You will need access to a reliable broadband connection with at least 2MB download speeds. You can test your broadband or 4G speeds by visiting http://www.speedtest.net.
  3. You must have a modern web browser installed. The most reliable options for use with UCC online learning are Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome. Download and installation instructions will be provided. Safari is not suitable.
  4. You must have Java and Flash Runtimes installed. Download and installation instructions will be provided.
  5. You will require an Office suite of software (Microsoft Office 2003 or later or equivalent) and a PDF reader (preferably Adobe Acrobat Reader XI or later). Please note that registered UCC students have access to discounted software from Microsoft and Adobe.

As part of UCC's commitment to Continuing Professional Development (CPD), students who have successfully completed a module from the Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Trials as a CPD module and subsequently undertake the programme within 24 months will be exempt from that module.

Requirements

  1. Students accepted on the Fundamentals of Clinical Trials (EH6123) module, are expected to hold an honours primary degree (NFQ Level 8), minimum Second-Class Honours grade II (2.2), or equivalent, in a Science or health related discipline, or relevant subject area.
  2. The EH6123 module is also open to registered (not necessarily in current employment) health care professionals in Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Clinical Therapies and Allied Health care disciplines who may not have a primary degree. Such applicants must provide evidence of current registration with the relevant professional regulatory body in their country (e.g. the Irish Medical Council, the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland, the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland etc. for Irish applicants).
  3. In exceptional circumstances, candidates with an honours primary degree (NFQ Level 8 or international equivalent) in an unrelated field, and who can demonstrate relevant experience in clinical research may be considered under Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for entry to the programme, subject to the approval of the programme team.
  4. Applicants may be asked to participate in an interview.
  5. In all cases, decisions will be based on qualifications.

Fees and Costs

The fee for this module is €1,350.00. There is also a €35 application fee.
