All anaesthetists, intensivists and pain physicians at UCC affiliated hospitals teach medical students and postgraduate trainees. We regularly receive visiting Fellows from across Europe and elsewhere who are undertaking higher subspecialty training. Most permanent clinical appointees to the South South-West Hospital Group are also Clinical Senior Lecturers at the School of Medicine, UCC.
Many consultants are research active and lead or participate in research projects, mainly in the areas of acute pain management and peripheral nerve blockade or science of training medical professionals. Two posts as Research Fellow in Peripheral Nerve Blockade and one Lecturer in Anaesthesia are recruited each year and provide anaesthetic trainees with 50% dedicated academic time and an opportunity to learn the fundamentals of clinical research in a structured and supported environment.
A variable number of additional posts as researcher and research assistant are offered on a competitive basis. Ms Mary Ahern is Senior Administrator for the Department and is based at Cork University Hospital.
