Outline

Module Goal

To enable learners develop an understanding of the fundamentals of structural anatomy of the human nervous system.

Module Content

This module will detail the structural anatomy of the human nervous system. Areas of significance in this regard; the structural biology of skull, meninges, brain, spinal cord and vertebral column, neurovascular structures. The main emphasis will be on identifying these neuroanatomical features as viewed through surgical windows.

Additional Teaching Mode Information

  • 20 x 1hr(s) lectures
  • 2 x 1 hr(s) tutorials
  • 2 x 3(hrs) laboratory sessions

Course commences 10/02/2025 and concludes 03/05/2025

Practicalities

Continuous Assessment - 100 marks

  • E-tivities - 4 x MCQ/SAQ quizzes - 80 marks.
  • Discussions Board(s) - Discussion to apply module content relevant to the design and development of medical device design and development - 20 marks.

Why Choose

On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:

  1. Use appropriate anatomical terminology to describe neuroanatomical structures and their locations in the vertebral column and skull.

  2. Identify features on the surface of the brain and spinal cord.

  3. Identify important features of the central nervous system.

  4. Identify the neurovascular structures of the central nervous system (CNS).

  5. Describe the surgical access pathways to various neuroanatomical structures through surgical windows.

  6. Discuss the structure-function relationship of CNS.

  7. Display critical thinking in the discussion of access to neuroanatomical structures in the context of the design and development of medical technologies.

Requirements

This micro-credential is  organised to accommodate part-time students who are working in industry looking to upskill or reskill in this specialist area.

Fees and Costs

The HCI Pillar 3 Micro-credential Learner Fee Subsidy has been introduced to enable more learners to address critical skills gaps and engage with lifelong learning.
