Core Competencies Nursing and Midwifery 2025-2026

"To describe an individual as ‘Fit to Practise’ in the context of certain professions is to say he or she possesses the attributes considered necessary in an individual to allow that individual to practise as an independent practitioner in their relevant profession." 

In accordance with UCC’s Fitness to Practise Policy and the professional standards set out by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI), students in the School of Nursing and Midwifery must demonstrate the following Core Competencies by graduation. 

1. Professional Conduct and Ethical Practice 

  1. Ensure that their practice, across both placement and university contexts, adheres to the legal, ethical and professional standards as outlined in the  Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI), Code of Professional Conduct and Ethics.
  2. Respect the dignity, confidentiality, autonomy, and privacy of individuals at all times.
  3. Maintain appropriate professional boundaries and act with honesty, integrity, and accountability. 

2. Safe and Effective Practice 

  1. Demonstrate competence in delivering safe, evidence-based care within scope of practice.
  2. Demonstrate the appropriate knowledge, understanding and skills to provide quality nursing and midwifery care to individuals. 
  3. Conduct appropriate clinical assessments, investigations to inform decision making and therapeutic interventions within scope of practice.

3. Communication and Collaboration

  1. Communicate respectfully and compassionately with individuals, families, and colleagues.
  2. Communicate effectively with individuals, their families, and other professionals by providing the information necessary, in an appropriate format, to enable them to make informed decisions regarding care. 
  3. Maintain accurate, timely, and appropriate records and reports in accordance with legal and statutory requirements and best practice.
  4. Work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary and interprofessional team to support coordinated care delivery.
  5. Collaborate with individuals, families, to plan and deliver person-centred, quality care. 

4. Personal Responsibility and Professionalism

  1. Recognise and take appropriate action regarding any physical or mental health grounds that may render them unable to discharge the responsibilities of the profession.
  2. Engage in timely support and collaboration for those areas outside his/her scope practice, experience and competence
  3. Demonstrate reliability, punctuality, and responsibility in academic and clinical environments. 

Note: Students enrolled in postgraduate programmes may be required to meet additional programme-specific competencies and standards, in accordance with their scope of practice and the requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI).
