MA Philosophy (CKE53)
The MA Philosophy helps students to advance their general philosophical education while at the same time giving them the opportunity to pursue their own philosophical interest.
Students choose two MA modules from a range of options, which are taught during October-December. They prepare a directed literature review, in preparation for their minor dissertation, in January-March. Finally, they write a minor dissertation on a subject of their choice during the period May-September.
The Learning Objectives of this MA programme are:
Students will apply and critique fundamental concepts, methods and vocabulary of philosophical discourse, research and writing.
Students will be familiar with and assess critically two philosophical research areas of their choice in reading and seminar discussionStudents will complete a Literature and Minor Dissertation on a topic of their choice.
The EU tuition fee for this MA programme 2009/2010 (1 year full-time) is expected to be €4,855.00. The academic year is due to commence the week beginning 21st September 2009.

Course Content
Candidates pursue a full-time taught programme for one year from the date of first registration for the programme.
Students register for two 15 credit MA modules in Philosophy (teaching period 1) (=30 credits).
Candidates prepare a Literature Review under the supervision of a member of staff, for submission on or before March 30 (20 credits).
A minor dissertation (max. 20,000 words) must be submitted for examination at the Winter Examination Board (40 credits).
Students take 90 credits as follows:

two modules to the value of 30 credits from the following:
PH6001 Metaphysics of Mind and Agency (15 credits)
PH6002 Philosophies of Art (15 credits)
PH6003 Perception, Experience, Consciousness (15 credits)
PH6004 International Justice and Territory (15 credits)
PH6005 Contemporary Political Philosophy (15 credits)
PH6006 Negative Ethics – East and West (15 credits)

1 year, full-time
*Non-EU students are not eligible for part-time programmes
Entry Requirements
Candidates will normally hold at least a Second Class Honours/Grade I primary degree (or equivalent) in philosophy. Students with degrees in cognate areas (such as social sciences, psychology, etc.) may be considered. Applicants who are not fully qualified may need to take a MA Qualifying Degree or Higher Diploma in Arts .
The entry requirements for 2009/2010 are subject to approval by the University Academic Board in March 2009
