Annual Irish Plant Scientists' Association Meeting 2024

17 Jun 2024

The Annual Irish Plant Scientists' Association Association Meeting 2024 was held at UCC on June 17 and 18, bringing together researchers to discuss advancements in plant science. Our group presented posters on inflorescence photosynthesis in Avena fatua and the functional strategies of grass weeds, with Callum also delivering a flash presentation. The conference focused on various themes, including plant diversity, biotechnology, and science communication, aiming to support early career researchers.

Our research group actively participated in the conference, showcasing two posters and a flash presentation.

Dr. Soualihou, presented a poster titled "The role of inflorescence photosynthesis in competitive ability and fecundity of an agricultural weed, Avena fatua." This poster highlighted the importance of inflorescence photosynthesis in enhancing the competitive traits and reproductive success of Avena fatuaSoualihou's poster (IPSAM)

Callum also made notable contributions with his poster presentation, "Investigating the functional strategies underlying the ‘weediness’ of grass weeds." In addition to his poster, Callum delivered a flash presentation that captivated the audience, offering insights into the mechanisms that contribute to the invasiveness of grass weeds. Callum's poster (IPSAM)

IPSAM's primary focus is to provide a platform for plant science research, particularly supporting early career researchers. The meeting also aims to foster a culture of collaboration and future partnerships between researchers and industry stakeholders.

The conference covered a broad range of themes, including:

  • Plant Diversity – From wildflowers to weeds
  • Systematics Conservation and Evolution
  • Plant Development and Phenology
  • Plant Biotechnology
  • Plant Stress (abiotic and biotic)
  • Applied Plant Science – From horticulture to soil
  • Science Communication

IPSAM 2024 facilitated dynamic discussions and networking opportunities, setting the stage for innovative research and collaboration in the field of plant science.
