- Site Description
- Muckross Gardens, part of the Muckross Estate in Killarney National Park, have a rich history dating back to the 1840s. The gardens were initially developed by the Herbert family, who built Muckross House in 1843. During the Great Famine (1845-1850), garden construction provided employment for local worker. In preparation for Queen Victoria's visit in 1861, the gardens underwent significant improvements, including the addition of paths, viewing platforms, and late-summer flowering plants. The Bourn Vincent family, who owned the estate from 1911 to 1932, commissioned major developments including glasshouses and new garden designs.Notable features include the Sunken Garden, which replaced formal Victorian terraces, a Rock Garden developed on natural limestone, and a Stream Garden. The gardens are home to a diverse collection of plants, including rhododendrons, azaleas, hydrangeas, and various exotic species.
