Weekend Round-Up | UCC Hockey Club
Last weekend both the UCC Women’s and Men’s teams travelled to Queen’s University Belfast to compete in the Chilean Cup and Mauritius Plate respectively.
Men’s Team – Mauritius Plate Champions 🏆
The men began their campaign with a 2–1 win against University of Galway. A strong Galway goalkeeper kept the scoreline close, but UCC held firm to secure the victory.
Their second game, against UL, proved tight and competitive, ending in a 0–0 draw — a fair result after an even contest.
With UL and UofG also drawing 0–0, the Mauritius Plate was awarded to UCC, marking the first silverware for the men’s team in some time. A fantastic achievement for the squad!
Women’s Team – Chilean Cup
The women opened their group stage with a 2–1 win over Trinity, a great start to the competition.
The next match was a tough encounter against EYHL 1 side UCD, featuring chances at both ends. Áine Power made key defensive saves off the line, but a second-half breakaway led to UCD’s lone goal and a narrow defeat.
That result set up a semi-final against Queen’s, another EYHL 1 opponent. Despite a strong and determined performance, Queen’s edged the game 1–0 to move into the final against UCD.
Due to travel logistics, UCC were unable to contest the 3rd/4th place playoff, but the team left Belfast proud of their performances against top opposition.
Women’s 2nds – Irish Junior Cup
On Thursday evening, the Women’s 2nds faced Cork Harlequins under the lights at Harlequin Park in the first round of the Irish Junior Cup.
Despite going in as favourites, UCC struggled to settle early on. Quins’ mix of experience and youth paid off as they opened the scoring with a stunning corner goal.
UCC hit back through Bronagh O’Shaughnessy, who finished off a superb set piece. However, Quins regained the lead soon after with a brilliant individual effort from Lily May Kelleher.
As UCC pushed for an equaliser, they removed their keeper in the final minutes — but Quins capitalised, scoring a late goal to seal a 3–1 win.
A disappointing result for the students, but plenty of positives to take as they look to continue their strong form in the Division 2 Munster League.
